Jayne Nicholls & Jonathan Ridd – Citizens’ Voice

Jayne Nicholls & Jonathan Ridd are winners of the Citizens’ Voice award sponsored by First Great Western

Following the death of their brother Paul, who suffered from a severe learning disability, Jonathan and Jayne have helped to implement recommendations that will improve the standard of care for adults in a similar position.

After Paul’s death in January 2004, an Ombudsman report was published, highlighting failures within the health board.

Jonathan and Jayne decided they wanted something positive to come from their brother’s death, which led them to become heavily involved in overseeing the implementation of the Ombudsman’s recommendations.

“We decided to set up a new Pathway to support adults with Learning Disabilities who access Hospital Care. Through it’s implementation, adults with learning difficulties should now have a better standard of care when they need it most.

The Pathway includes a number of tools to support the patient including a Traffic Lights Assesment Tool, Risk, Dependency and Assesment Tool and Pain Assesment Tool.

We are immensely proud of achieveing the implementation of the Pathway. Without it, adults with learning disabilities would be unnecessarily vulnerable when needing hospital care.”
